The independence freedom fighter Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi’s wife, Mukami Kimathi is dead .
On Friday, May 5th, her daughter Evelyn Kimathi Wangui confirmed her death. According to Wangui, her mother passed away on the evening of May 4.
Evelyn stated that her mother’s dying request was to have Dedan Kimathi’s remains sent home from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison so that he could be buried with honor.
The widow, aged 101, was admitted to a hospital in Nairobi for treatment of breathing troubles but was later pronounced dead.
During the fight for independence, Mukami was imprisoned alongside other Mau Mau liberation fighters at Kamiti Maximum Prison.
She played a crucial role in the movement that led to Kenya’s liberation over the colonial government.
Mukami was instrumental in organizing the dances that the tribe held to attract young men and women. Most men were hiding out in forests or in prisons.
Mukami’s Ksh1.3 million hospital bill was paid for with assistance from President William Ruto’s administration.
The Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, visited her in the Nairobi hospital and informed her of the financial assistance.
The funeral for Mukami Kimathi will take place in her village of Njabini in the county of Nyandarua.
Many Kenyans are in shock over the news, since Mukami was a powerful symbol of Kenya’s history and perseverance.
