President William Ruto has appointed James Mwangi, the Group Managing Director of Equity Group Holdings PLC, as the Chancellor of the Open University of Kenya.
The announcement was made by the head of state on Thursday, August 3rd, during a charter award ceremony for the institution held at Konza Technopolis in Machakos County.
Mwangi has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the institution, which will be based at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Arts and Technology (JKUAT).
His role includes overseeing the university’s development into a hub for producing top-tier professionals and innovators in the country.
“I am convinced that awarding a charter to the Open University of Kenya will significantly contribute to advancing higher education in our nation. Therefore, in accordance with the authority vested in me by Section 24 (1) b of the Universities Act, I hereby grant the charter to the Open University of Kenya,” declared Ruto.
The President emphasized that the university will be crucial in expanding academic opportunities in Kenya, particularly through online and distance learning.
The institution will offer self-paced study modules, correspondence courses, and technologically enhanced tutorials.
“This institution is now accessible to those seeking affordable and flexible academic programs in the country. I look forward to welcoming you to our classrooms by September 2023,” stated President Ruto.
In his remarks, James Mwangi expressed gratitude for being entrusted with the responsibility to serve the country.
“I am honored by the responsibility you have bestowed upon me to serve our nation. I am grateful, Sir. This responsibility comes at a time when my tenure at Meru University of Science and Technology has just ended. I want to convey my heartfelt appreciation,” added Mwangi, who is also the Group Chief Executive Officer of Equity Group Holdings PLC.
The university is set to offer a wide range of academic disciplines, including business, management, information technology, education, agriculture, health sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
