The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) has collaborated with the government to initiate 50,000 internship programs to address unemployment gaps in the country.
Many recent graduates are set to gain practical on-the-job training and skill development via the ‘Kenya Internship and Jobs Initiative.’
Juma Mukhwana, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Industry, emphasized that this effort would empower students to compete on a global scale effectively.
“The initiative to be launched later this year will complement the Public Service Internship Programme and the Teachers Service Commission internship programme, which have absorbed 4,000 and 25,000 fresh graduates, respectively,” Mukhwana noted.
Prospective candidates are invited to submit their applications through the online portal at www.kiji.go.ke. This platform will host job openings from various private sector entities.
In addition to receiving a monthly stipend, interns will acquire essential skills to enhance their competitiveness in local and global employment landscapes.
To ensure smooth program execution, the government has devised a comprehensive framework. This framework delineates expectations for interns regarding working conditions, insurance coverage, internship duration, and remuneration.
Mukhwana addressed the significance of this framework, explaining, “The absence of a structured framework was previously delaying our program rollout. We were committed to preventing our interns from entering industries with subpar working conditions.”
“We’ve witnessed cases where our graduates, once given opportunities, struggled to perform. Hence, it’s imperative that our training aligns with industry needs.” He further emphasized.
Commending the collaboration with the private sector, Mukhwana encouraged other stakeholders in the industry to join forces in bridging the unemployment gap within the country.
