In the past, replacing a lost birth certificate presented a daunting challenge, as individuals had to navigate multiple government offices with various documents in order to obtain approval.
However, thanks to the introduction of the eCitizen online portal, Kenyans now have the convenience of applying for a replacement of their lost birth certificates in a few simple steps.
How to Apply
According to the Civil Registration Services, the first step is to sign up or log in to your eCitizen account.
Once you have accessed the online portal, navigate to the civil registration services tab and select the option for ‘application for child’s current birth certificate.’
Next, choose ‘apply for a replacement of birth certificate’ from the provided drop-down menu.
You will then need to provide the necessary details and upload scanned copies of your parents’ identification cards, as well as a copy of the lost certificate if available, or the birth notification.
After completing the form and submitting the required documents, you will be prompted to make the indicated payment.
Upon successful completion of the process, you will receive a notification via message or email informing you of when and where you can collect your replaced birth certificate.
It is worth noting that a birth certificate holds significant importance, as it is required for national examinations, ID and passport applications, and even certain employment opportunities where recruiters may request it.
To streamline the entire process, Julius Bitok, the Principal Secretary of Immigration and Citizen Services, announced on Friday, May 5, that Kenyans will now receive their replacement birth certificates on the same day of application, ensuring a faster turnaround time.
