The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Second Vice National chairperson John Wesonga Lutta is dead.
Wesonga was pronounced dead at Nairobi hospital following a long illness.
Union Secretary-General Collins Oyuu has confirmed Wesonga’s demise.
“John Wesonga will be remembered as a great Trade unionist when he served as the Executive Secretary of KNUT in the larger Butere/Mumias Branch before taking over Mumias Branch after it was split into two,” SG Oyuu said.
Oyuu expressed gratitude towards the dedicated staff who unwaveringly supported the union official during his hospitalization, emphasizing the importance of maintaining such a profound sense of brotherhood.
“On behalf of the National Steering, the National Executive Council, I convey our heartfelt message of condolences at this trying time.”
Wesonga was elected as the union’s second vice chairperson in June 2021, alongside Stanley Mutai, the first Vice National Chairman.
During the election Oyuu was elected unopposed as KNUT’s 7th Secretary General for a period of 5 years, Hesbon Otieno was elected as his deputy.
the Union’s National Chairperson Patrick Karinga retained his seat while James Ndiku was elected the National Treasurer replacing John Matiang’i who opted out of the race.
Ali Hussein was elected as the Deputy National Chairperson
Kennedy Nyamwanda was elected the Assistant National Treasurer while Mercy Kiambati and Mery Ndungu were elected as national women representatives.
Edward Olando was voted in as representative of people living with disabilities while Boniface Tenai, Albert Njeru Mutani and Fredrick Nguma were elected the first, second and third national trustees respectively.
