Police in Rongai clashed with students from Multimedia University who engaged in protests over delayed disbursement of funds by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
The agitated students set fires and obstructed the roads in the campus vicinity, notably Magadi Road on Tuesday morning. In response, the police used teargas to disperse the crowd.
These protests had a ripple effect on nearby businesses.
Viral videos shared on social media, showed students setting tires on fire and others fleeing the premises. Some were seen scaling fences to escape the chaotic scene.
As of now, the institution has not released an official statement explaining the root cause of the protests.
This demonstration occurred shortly after Babu Owino, a former student leader and current Embakasi East Mp, voiced concern over the delayed payments.
He urged student leaders from various higher education institutions to spearhead efforts in advocating for quicker allocation of financial aid.
Owino called upon the government to swiftly address the situation, emphasizing the hardships experienced by numerous students who heavily rely on this financial support.
On September 29, he stated “The CS TREASURY together with HELB must move with Speed, release money to University Students who are sick and tired of sleeping Hungry. Student leaders should stop sleeping on duty,”
