The Public Service Commission (PSC) has announced seven job vacancies in four public Universities around the country.
Maasai Mara and Kaimosi Friends University each have a single vacant position for the role of Vice-Chancellor.
Additionally, Kaimosi Friends University is actively seeking a Deputy Vice-Chancellor who will oversee administrative, finance, and development responsibilities.
Chuka University has two posts for deputy Vice Chancellors to work under; administration, finance, planning and development, and academic, research, and student affairs. Kibabii University is seeking to recruit a deputy Vice-Chancellor who will work under academics and Student Affairs.
“Applications should reach the Commission on or before August 28, 2023, at 5.00 pm (East African Time),” reads the advertisement.
Interested applicants have been urged to visit the Commission’s website: www.publicservice.go.ke. for more details.
The advert comes even after the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) recommended that the PSC should no longer be involved in recruiting Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors for universities.
The reform proposal suggests that this practice has led to governance challenges within public universities in Kenya. The statement explains that the participation of the PSC in appointing top university management compromises their autonomy and, therefore, should be discontinued.
The reform advocates for university councils to independently conduct the recruitment and appointment processes for chancellors, principals of colleges, and deputy principals in public universities without involving the PSC.
Instead, they want university councils to recruit and appoint chancellors, principals of colleges, and deputy principals in public universities without the involvement of PSC.
The task force recommends that the process of hiring vice-chancellors which would take 14 days, should begin at least six months before the expiry of the tenure of the sitting ones.
The team also proposed that any person seeking the post of a university chancellor must have a Ph.D. and a distinct career in the public or private sector.
