The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced new registration criteria for teachers under the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) through the TSC (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The updated regulations mandate that all prospective candidates demonstrate their eligibility for registration.
The new guidelines apply to teachers specializing in one teaching subject, Early Childhood Development Education (EDCE) instructors with Montessori training, individuals holding certifications from foreign educational institutions, and those in special needs education.
Entry Requirements for Teacher Registration under CBC
For individuals holding a Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE), a minimum grade of C plain in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and a DECTE certificate are required.
Candidates with disabilities should have attained a grade of C- (minus).
Candidates with a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) need to present their certificate, along with a minimum grade of C in KCSE, a D in Mathematics, and a C- in English. Those with disabilities must have achieved a C- in KCSE.
Similarly, candidates with a Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE) must provide their certificate during registration, with a minimum grade of C in KCSE, C+ in two teaching subjects, and C grades in English, Kiswahili/Kenya Sign Language, and Mathematics.
Candidates with disabilities should have scored a C in KCSE, C in two teaching subjects, and C- in English, Kiswahili/Kenya Sign Language, and Mathematics.
Candidates with a Diploma in Technical Teacher Education (DTTE) are required to have a minimum grade of C in KCSE, a C+ in two related STEM technical teaching subjects, and a diploma in General Technical subjects offered at junior and senior school levels.
Candidates with a Bachelor in Education or a Bachelor of Arts with Education should possess the respective degree, along with a minimum grade of C+ in KCSE, C+ in two teaching subjects, C in English, and D+ in Mathematics.
Other candidates holding a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree require a minimum grade of C+ in KCSE, C+ in two teaching subjects, and a postgraduate diploma in Education.
Additionally, candidates with a Diploma in Adult and Continuing Teacher Education need to present their certificate, with a minimum grade of C plain in KCSE and a C- for learners with special needs.
Registration of Teachers with One Teaching Subject
Candidates with a Bachelor of Education degree must have achieved a grade of C+ and above in KCSE, a C+ and above in the teaching subject, and a C in English and D+ in Mathematics.
Candidates with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree should have attained a minimum grade of C+ in KCSE, a C+ in the teaching subject, and a postgraduate diploma in education.
Prospect teachers with a Diploma in Education should have scored a C in C+ in teaching subjects or a Diploma in a subject offered at the junior and senior school level.
Qualifications for Candidates with Certificates from Learning Institutions
Foreign candidates seeking registration under TSC must have their academic certificates equated and a professional education certificate recognized by a relevant body.
The candidates should also possess a work permit, a registration certificate as a teacher from their training jurisdiction, and an authorization letter from the Ministerial Vetting Committee.
Special Needs Education
Candidates with a Diploma in Special Needs Education should have attained a minimum grade of C in KCSE, while candidates with disabilities require an entry grade of C-. Those with a Bachelor of Education should have achieved a mean grade of C+ in KCSE, and C+ in either English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Biology, Kenya Sign Language (KSL), or any art subjects.
Besides, candidates must specialize in various areas of disabilities such as autism, intellectual disabilities, visual impairment, and physical disability.
