A third year student at the University of Eldoret (UoE) has allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death following a dispute about their romantic relationship.
The incident occurred in a hostel close to the university campus, and police officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are investigating the case.
The suspect, identified as Elikana Kiplagat Korir, reportedly attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself in the chest with the same knife used in the killing but was rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment.
The police believe that the quarrel was a result of a love triangle that had been ongoing for some time.
The hostel owner took the suspect to the hospital after breaking into the room, where there had been a commotion.
The hostels are at Sogome Centre, which is just next to the university on the Eldoret-Ziwa highway.
The police collected a blood-stained kitchen knife from the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
The identity and course of study of the deceased and the suspect are yet to be established.
According to a witness who lived near the hostel, the couple had been locked inside the room for approximately four days before the incident.
