Primary school headteachers are showing reluctance to apply for the Curriculum Support Officer (CSO) positions, which were recently advertised by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Last month, TSC put out advertisements for CSO I (84 positions), CSO II (regular) (286 positions), and CSO II (CSO SNE) (295 positions).Additionally, they also advertised 95 positions for Principal Teacher Management Officers (PTMO).
The commission further re-advertised the aforementioned vacancies on Tuesday 18 July ,2023 due to lack of interest from a section of primary school headteachers
Primary school teachers are deliberately avoiding applying for the CSO positions, citing concerns that the role does not offer substantial financial incentives. Many headteachers in job group C5 believe that the CSO position lacks lucrative funds, making it unattractive.
P1 headteachers express their reservations, as they currently manage budgets that include important allocations like the homegrown school feeding program, Free Primary Education (FPE), and the Junior Secondary School (JSS) funds (Free Day Secondary Education Funds – FDSE).
One headteacher, speaking anonymously, shared, “The CSO does not have sufficient funds and they frequently visit schools, expecting tips from the headteachers. I cannot leave a position where I have a stable income for a role where I would have to rely on seeking support.”
For appointment as a CSO, candidates must have served as a Curriculum Support Officer in TSC scale 10 for a minimum of three years.
Additionally, they should possess a master’s degree in education or special education from a recognized institution and have completed a management course lasting at least two weeks.
Applicants are advised to visit the TSC website for more details regarding the re-advertisement.
The re-advertisement emphasizes that interested candidates who meet the required qualifications should submit their applications online through the TSC Website at https://teachersonline.tsc.go.ke.
The deadline for submitting applications is August 1, 2023, at 5:00 PM.
“TSC is an equal opportunity employer, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply,” reads part of the advert.
